The Gilroy Wine Region, and more specifically the Uvas (grape) Valley, is one of the oldest in California. Grapes were grown here for the missions in the late 1700's. While Gilroy is known for garlic it also grows treats like mushrooms and of course wine grapes. While the suburban sprawl from the San Jose area is moving toward Gilroy there are efforts to protect the land for agriculture. With the increasing population comes a bigger and richer market and a few more wineries. There are numerous visitor services in the Gilroy - Morgan Hill area along Highway 101 - the historic El Camino Real or Royal Highway of the Spanish. The area is also known as the southern Santa Clara Valley.
