Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's for tasters

The site is free for now. Why a $30 one-time membership fee for Questers (tasters)?

We feel that a fee will help keep out spammers and help us clean out those folks who like to cause trouble. We want to maintain a decent and classy Web community and a small fee helps. OK, and since we are not venture capital financed and don't want to be, we need the bucks. No fee during the start-up phase!

Did you say "advertising"!?

Yes, this will be an advertising revenue model, along with new member fees. Will that be painful for the members? Probably not. Since we are not building this site to sell to Google or some other big company we can be picky about who can advertise and what their content is.

What happens if Questers include their taste preferences in their profile?

From that information we can tell your social security number, mother's maiden name, birth date, and shoe size. We'll make a fortune selling the information on the Internet!

OK, we can only tell your shoe size. But if we give wineries that information and they can see a big enough market, wineries can offer designer wines for your taste profile and market them directly to you. This should offer a new and interesting dimension to wine tasting. The wineries are developing their products for a mass market ruled by the tastes of Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. Give them the opportunity to design their wines directly for you!

FAQ's for wineries

Did Prestons actually visit over 600 winery tasting rooms for this project?

Yes. We find other sources of winery maps and information to be inadequate and often inaccurate. We are "handcrafting" this site with actual visits instead of dumping public information onto the site and hoping for the best.

What does it cost a winery to join or be a member?

Nothing. We ask that you keep your profile information updated so that tasters are working with the most accurate information. That is the only cost.

How can we promote our winery on this site?

A complete profile really helps. If you want to stand out more than that then advertising will be available. There are cleaver free ways to promote a winery such as leading a special interest group, encouraging friends of the winery and offering them something interesting, answering questions on the forums, and blogging.

FAQ's for vineyards

Why should a vineyard join?

Several vineyard owners wanted to brand their vineyards so tasters would recognize them. Think of this as an "Intel Inside" type of branding. We developed a Vineyard category and profile that is available to vineyard owners to explain the benefits of their grapes and farming processes.
